Hydration Tips

Summer has arrived in the North State which means triple digit temperatures are a regular occurrence. Whether you are out enjoying our beautiful lakes and trails, participating in sports, or taking your dog on an evening walk it is important to make staying hydrated a priority. Proper hydration helps our bodies regulate its temperature, carries oxygen and nutrients to the cells, and provides lubrication to the joints and many other essential body functions.

Experts Offer These Hydration Tips

  • Be sure to hydrate BEFORE spending time outdoors. Waiting to drink until you are already thirsty and hot is not as effective at preventing hydration. Adults should consume 17-20 ounces and children should drink 4-8 ounces prior to activity
  • While outside adults should consume 7-10 ounces every 20 minutes and children should consume 5-9 ounces every 20 minutes
  • Wear light colored and loose fitting clothing
  • Take frequent breaks in the shade

Signs And Symptoms Of Dehydration

The following are signs of mild dehydration. If you are a healthy adult these symptoms can be self-treated by drinking more fluids or a sports drink. If a child or elderly adult experiences any of the following consult a physician:

  • Dry lips and tongue
  • Dry, sticky mouth
  • Dizziness, fatigue
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Dark colored urine

More severe dehydration requires immediate medical attention:

  • Rapid breathing or heart rate
  • Inability to keep liquids down
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Disorientation
  • Little to no urine output
  • Sunken eyes
  • Diarrhea

It is very important to stay in tune to your bodies warning signs. It is always a good idea to consult your health care provider for tips to stay safe in the sun.
