Owens Healthcare is proud to have served the Northern California community with local pharmacy services since 1957. Please check out the history of our business here in the North State.
The first retail pharmacy was established in downtown Redding, CA by the Owens family. This pharmacy was a full line pharmacy and known as “the corner drug store.”
Royce Friesen began working at Owens Pharmacy as a Pharmacist.
A second retail pharmacy was opened in Redding, CA by the Owens family. Residential care and assisted living facilities were also serviced out of this location, which was the beginning of Owens’ servicing patients in long term care facilities.
Royce Friesen purchased the two existing Redding pharmacies from the Owens family.
Two additional pharmacies were opened in Anderson, CA and Red Bluff, CA.
A pharmacy management company was formed to assist in coordinating and managing the four pharmacies.
Corporate offices and the four pharmacies were computerized. A new division, Medical Supply, was added to the growing network.
Home I.V. and nutritional services were established to serve the ever-expanding demand for home care. New and larger locations were built to accommodate the expanding Owens Healthcare entities.
The Infusion Services Pharmacy achieved accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
A fifth retail pharmacy was formed in a newly established medical complex in Redding, CA. The closed-door pharmacy moved to its own location and a second closed-door pharmacy was established in Chico to service the pharmaceutical needs of residential care and assisted living facilities throughout Northern California.
Corporate offices moved to an expanded location in Redding, CA.
The downtown Retail Pharmacy joined with the Compounding Pharmacy, Medical Equipment, and Infusion Services as a combined health store. This “one stop” medical store was a new concept in Redding for meeting the healthcare needs of the community.
The Napa Valley Pharmacy was purchased by Owens Healthcare, thus adding the fifth retail pharmacy to the growing company.
The Medical Equipment division achieved accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
The Medical Equipment division also expanded its business by opening a location in Chico, CA.
The Compounding Pharmacy achieved accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
The Medical Equipment division expanded its business to Susanville, CA, bringing the total locations to four including the two in Redding, CA, and one in Chico, CA.
Owens Healthcare was selected as one of the top 25 companies on the 50 Best Small Medium Companies to Work for in America, a joint endeavor of the Great Place to Work Institute (GPTWI) and the Society for Human
Resource Management (SHRM).
The two closed-door pharmacies established in Redding and Chico were sold in order to gain greater focus on the other lines of business held by Owens Healthcare.
A sixth retail pharmacy was opened in Redding, CA, expanding the business to the eastside of town.
Owens Healthcare was voted the Best Pharmacy in the North State, and recognized for catering to clients needs with a personal touch and short wait times.

The retail pharmacy located in Napa, CA, was sold and the division expanded its home market by opening two more stores; a fourth location in Redding, CA, and a second location in Red Bluff, CA. For the third year running, Owens Healthcare was voted Best Pharmacy in the North State.
An eighth retail pharmacy was opened in Susanville, CA, and the Medical Equipment division expanded its business to Red Bluff, CA, bringing the total locations to five. For the fourth year running, Owens Healthcare was voted Best Pharmacy in the North State.
A ninth retail pharmacy was opened in Redding and a tenth in Weaverville, CA. The Compounding Pharmacy achieved accreditation from the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board (PCAB). For the fifth year running, Owens Healthcare was voted Best Pharmacy in the North State.
Owens Healthcare acquired the Weed Family Pharmacy in Weed, CA, as well as opened a new pharmacy in Mt. Shasta, CA. Additionally a new Compounding/Retail Pharmacy was opened inside the new Shasta Orthopaedics building in Redding. For the sixth year running, Owens Healthcare was voted Best Pharmacy in the North State.
We expanded our pharmacy services by beginning a Transitional Care Discharge Partnership (Bedside Program) with the three Dignity hospitals in the North State, including an Owens technician going into the Redding hospital. In May, Owens closed its Medical Equipment location in Red Bluff, CA, and opened a new Medical Equipment location in Yuba City, CA. For the seventh year running, Owens Healthcare was voted Best Pharmacy in the North State.
In April, Owens opened their thirteenth retail pharmacy in Palo Cedro, CA, expanding the business east of Redding. The Yuba City Medical Equipment office moved in July to a larger facility that allows for easier patient access and growth. In October, the Compounding/Retail pharmacy inside Shasta Orthopaedics in Redding was consolidated with the existing Owens pharmacies on Court Street. For the eighth year running, Owens Healthcare was voted Best Pharmacy in the North State.
Ten years after getting out of the Long Term Care pharmacy business, Owens returned to providing these services by opening a pharmacy in Redding. The Medical Equipment location on Court Street in Redding was consolidated with the existing Medical Equipment location on Railroad Avenue. For the ninth year running, Owens Healthcare was voted Best Pharmacy in the North State.
In January, we expanded our Transition Care Discharge Program to Shasta Regional Medical Center, with a technician dedicated to the hospital. In February, the pharmacy in Anderson was moved two doors down into a larger facility for easier patient access and growth. In June, the pharmacy on Airpark Drive in Redding was consolidated with the pharmacy on Court St. For the tenth year running, Owens Healthcare was voted Best Pharmacy in the North State.
In February, the pharmacy on Placer Street in Redding was moved across the street and inside of Shasta Community Health Center in order to better service our shared patients. In October, the pharmacy in Mt. Shasta was moved across the street into a facility with more parking and more accessibility for our patients. The Long Term Care pharmacy in Redding also began servicing the Chico and Yuba City areas. For the eleventh year running, Owens Healthcare was voted Best Pharmacy in the North State.
Owens formed a real estate division, which provides property management services to a growing portfolio of commercial properties. In July, it was announced that the Owens retail pharmacies were sold to CVS. For the twelfth year running, Owens was voted Best Pharmacy in the North State.
Due to COVID-19, 2020 presented challenges like no other. We are proud of what we accomplished this year in spite of the pandemic, and we were honored to be an essential healthcare provider to our patients in the areas we serve. We are looking forward to a successful 2021.
Currently consisting of an infusion pharmacy, a compounding pharmacy, a long term care pharmacy, four medical equipment locations and a real estate division, Owens is among the most diversified and successful organizations in the North State.
